A piece of German history
I have been trying to research a silver drinks flask and matching cigarette case that I bought from an antique dealer in Bucharest 3 years ago. From this quest I have learnt a little about the history of the 1936 games and read many fascinating articles and viewed some beautiful photographs.
The flask and cigarette case have the same red sardonyx work (and also green) with the sports eagle as the Olympic ring that was presented to the top officials that organised the games. I have tried extensively to find out who the silver smith/creator of the Olympic ring was and also to cross reference the hallmarks but have not yet discovered this information. The flask has 1936 on one corner and a bullet in bass relief on the other but each item has no direct reference to the games other than the sports eagle on sardonyx and the date 1936.
I am assuming (which is not always a good thing!!!) that both items belonged to an organiser or participant of the shooting section of the 1936 Olympiad. Following this route I have tried to research the organiser Gerhard Bock and the competitors Cornelius van Oyen, Heinz Hax and Erich Krempel. Again I haven’t found much information via the internet Being aware that Germany were Romania’s allies at the beginning of the war I wondered if this was when the items arrived in the country. Curiously Lisbeth Bock born in 1930 (place unknown) was living in Sibiu and then Timisoara , Romania as an adult. She was a swimming champion (freestyle, fourteen national titles during 1948-1955). I have found many possible links through names but all of these are just unfounded unless proven otherwise.
For 74 years the attractive little silver items have been travelling around Europe, I wonder if their history will ever be known
